Making Money From Open Source

This is the first reasonably coherent effort I've found to explain how one makes money by releasing open source software. I'm not sure it really applies to the little guy, but it seeks to explain how people like IBM and Sun can make money by giving away products like Eclipse and Project Looking Glass

A well-written article in the link, guess one of the first attempts to clear the paradox...a short one, but enough to start the discussion going...

In the last two years, it is heartening to see specific revenue models emerge in this area...( see a link from eIT.in - Making Money from Open Source Software , this page provides a good list of articles & opinions and various emerging business models)...as companies such as Red Hat become more successful, especially with making money from the subscription and support model, it will become increasingly clear that making money from royalties on a software product belonged to a bygone era
